Environment

For many years the Menorcan government has had a moratorium on development on the island so while there are small pockets of the coast with large hotels, the majority of coastline is unspoilt with a large number of small "virgin" beaches. Many of these are only accessible by car or boat but it is well worth looking for them.

Geologically, the island is broadly split in two. The north and eastside consists of granite and the vegetation is darker. The south and west are sandstone with red and dusty soil. The fact that UNESCO has designated the island as a biosphere reserve is recognition of the careful and sustainable approach that has been taken in developing the island's economy.

The waters around Menorca are exceptionally clean and clear, making it a perfect place for swimming, snorkelling and diving, with varied and interesting marine life.
